Straps, hooks, and hand winches. How to ensure safety when securing cargo

To ensure a smooth ride, it is very important to have equipment that brings safety, practicality, and firmness to your cargo. An efficient cargo lashing guarantees the safety of the products transported and also the integrity of the people involved in the operations.

Learn how to secure loads correctly

To avoid accidents, the truck’s cargo lashing must be firm, so that the products transported do not wobble, are thrown from the vehicle or can cause tipping over. The load must be well distributed in the body in order to reach a balance point and not overload any side of the vehicle.

To make a good lashing, lashing straps, steel cables, or other equipment with a total tensile strength of at least twice the weight of the load must be used. Also, equipment such as retaining bars, meshes, rails, and separators can be used as additional safety devices.

The weight limit provided for by the legislation must always be observed. In addition to bringing the risk of tipping the truck, excess weight impairs the steering, braking, visibility, and stability of the vehicle, making it unstable and increasing the risk of collisions.

Balanced load distribution is also essential to prevent tipping. If different materials are transported, arrange them so that they can be unloaded in the right order, in order to preserve the balance of the weight in the dump-cart.

Avoid accidents during tipping

Before taking the road, the driver must be informed about the route and its dangers, such as bumpy roads, tunnels, elevations, and sharp curves. During stops, the driver must check the load situation and tighten the lashing straps to the vehicle again.

Accidents can also occur at low speeds and even when the truck is stopped to tip. When loading the vehicle, never leave a heavier weight in different areas of the dump-cart, as this can cause instability to the vehicle.

When tipping, excess weight can cause uncontrolled cargo, tipping over, and even damage the hydraulic equipment that raises the dump-cart.

When transporting liquid loads, you must pay attention to the tank level. If it is not full, the movement of the liquid will greatly affect the stability of the truck, especially when cornering. The same care applies to hanging or live loads.

Meet the legislation on cargo lashing

The cargo lashing sets composed of hand winch, strap, and hook provide greater security and efficiency in transport. The equipment used must be resistant and obey the current legislation.

Since the beginning of 2017, cargo ropes have been banned by Resolution 552 of the National Traffic Council (Contran). The purpose of the measure is to improve security requirements.

Learn how to use the hooks and lashing points

The anchor point is also very important, as the truck driver is of no use using resistant equipment if the anchor point does not support the weight of the load when it is most requested, such as during a sudden stop. Therefore, the anchoring points must be in good condition and dimensioned to support the cargo lashing.

Another Contran measure, resolution 588, prohibits the use of fixing hooks attached directly to the wooden crossbar of the body, which must have chassis and metal crossbars. The recommended metal fastener has three screws – one vertically and two horizontally – so that its base has more support.

When transporting fractional loads (with small quantities of products that do not fully occupy the truck’s capacity), the products must have at least four lashing points in the metallic structure of the body.

In the case of vehicles with an open body and folding side guards, if there is space between the load and the guards, the lashing devices must be tensioned from the inside of the side guards.

Discover Robustec lashing straps

Robustec lashing straps guarantee practicality and safety for your cargo, avoiding tipping during transport. They offer several options for assembly and capacity, according to the application and the specific load securing needs of each customer.

With over 30 different items, the complete line of Robustec lashing straps includes models with hooks in the flat, “J,” triangle, “Moto,” claw and swivel formats, all with or without hand winch. These products offer different assembly and capacity options, according to your application and the specific load securing needs of each customer.

The lashing straps are 100% polyester and chemically treated for less water absorption, and also receive heat treatment, according to the requirements of safety standards. Some materials undergo heat treatment, and the hooks and hand winches are made of bichromatic steel.

Robustec also has a complete line of accessories for securing cargo that offers everything you need to tie your cargo securely. Available options include items from the simplest to the most sophisticated, such as hand winches, clamps, tensioners, and secure fastening terminals for securing cargo.
