How to choose tie-down equipment for your load

amarração de carga

The tie down equipment should provide safety, preserve load integrity, and be strong enough to withstand sudden braking, cornering and acceleration.

The equipment used must be resistant and comply with current legislation. Materials such as polyester straps, cables and steel chains are best suited for tying.

Here’s how to choose the best tie down equipment

The choice of the most appropriate equipment depends on the type of load, the lashing system, the bodywork and the anchorage point. The key is to use equipment that is proven to be reliable and capable of facilitating transport operations.

For example, when transporting steel sheets, these materials must be secured with polyester straps, which have a greater area of contact with the piece. The amount and spacing between the straps vary according to the dimensions and weight of the metal sheets.

The use of steel cables is not recommended in this case, as these materials can deform depending on the angle used, and do not provide as many points of contact with the steel plates. Also the chains are not suitable for this purpose, as they can damage the edges of the plates, if they are of low thickness.

Know the advantages of tie down straps

Simple to use, load tie down straps offer many mounting options and fit perfectly with accessories such as road ratchets, holders, winch cables and fasteners to attach ropes and steel cables. These equipment ensure the integrity of the load during movement and also guarantee the safety of the people involved in the operations.

Made of 100% polyester material, the tie down straps can withstand varying capacities, from 1,500 kg to 10,000 kg. For loads on trucks, trains and airplanes, the use of straps with a capacity of 5,000 kg is indicated. And for tying heavier loads, such as agricultural implements and generators, it is recommended to use straps with 10,000 kg capacity.

The tie down straps are also chemically treated for less water absorption and receive heat treatment. These products follow safety standards for practical and safe use, with black seams to indicate their capacity.

Understand why the ropes were banned

Since the beginning of 2017, ropes for load tie down were banned by the 552 Resolution of the National Traffic Council (Contran). The goal of the measure is to improve safety requirements. The ropes have lower resistance than other materials used for tying, such as polyester straps.

While a 12 mm diameter truck rope has a rupture load of 1,500 Kgf (with a safety factor of 2:1 – work load = 750 kg), a 50 mm wide ratchet tie down strap provides rupture load of 6,000 Kgf (with safety factor of 2:1 – work load = 3,000 Kgf). The resistance of the strap, in this case, is four times greater than that of the rope.

In addition, the efficiency of the strings depends greatly on the knots used in the end and the trucker’s knowledge and practice executing those knots. The ratchets used in the straps offer much more practicality and safety than the knots of the ropes.

Learn how to choose tie down equipment

When purchasing tie down equipment, be sure to check if they have a visible identification stating data such as the name of the manufacturer, maximum load, length, date of manufacture, Brazilian standard number NBR and traceability code.

Also, make sure that the materials are in good condition to be used, observing if they do not have perforations, defiabilities, deformations, kneading or corrosion.

Check if the products comply with safety standards and with the most current legislation. Finally, be sure to require the supplier’s quality assurance certificate and batch test.

By using quality products and following safety recommendations, you can minimize risk and achieve greater efficiency.
