Cargo lashing is a fundamental factor to ensure efficiency and safety in cargo handling in the most diverse areas, such as transportation, industry, nautical activities, among others.
The correct use of hand winch lashing straps brings greater practicality, safety, and resistance to operations, optimizing processes, and helping to reduce costs. Therefore, when purchasing this equipment, you need to ensure that it is strong enough to withstand the moving load and that it is certified and complies with current legislation.
Learn how to use hand winch lashing straps
Acting in conjunction with the lashing strap, the hand winch is responsible for ensuring that the goods remain intact during handling and transport operations, even in adverse conditions, such as sudden braking.
The hand winch straps wrap the cargo in a completely safe way, being able to support hundreds of kilos and to provide greater stability during movement, to avoid slipping and tipping of the loads and not damaging the smooth or finished surface of the product.
To stretch the belt, it must first be passed through the cavity inside the hand winch and then through the other hole located at the top. The hand winch must be tensioned around the drum until the load is firm.
Be careful not to let the strap wrap around itself. To unlock the hand winch and release the lashing strap, it is necessary to fully open the lever and press the internal mechanism of the hand winch to release the tension of the strap.
The hand winches are driven by a steel crank, providing less fatigue to the operator. Its locking system can be manual mechanics for 100mm hand winches and spring mechanics for 50mm hand winches, fixed through screws and nuts on truck bodies.
The steel crank allows the operator to handle heavy loads without much effort. For example, to suspend a load of 1100 kg on the first cable line with a 265 mm lever, it is necessary to apply a driving force on the crank of approximately 9 kgf.
The car-carrier road hand winch has a friction locking system, which automatically locks the cable when it is released, both when pulling, suspending, or releasing loads.
When unlocking the hand winch to loosen the lashing strap, make sure that the load is stabilized and does not offer a danger of falling during unloading.
To prolong the life of the hand winch, periodic maintenance of the equipment is recommended, which can be carried out with the use of a little lubricant in the tensioning device.
Discover the Robustec hand winch line
Robustec hand winches are produced with welded carbon steel and finished with electrolytic zinc plating and/or epoxy powder paint, depending on the model. Available in various models and capacities, the hand winches can be used with a polyester strap or steel cable for lashing, fixing, suspending, and tensioning loads in truck bodies, boards, railroad cars, among others.
The complete line of Robustec fixed, or mobile hand winches include the road hand winch with fixation support; fixed road hand winch (right or left) for tensioning straps used in lashing; fixed hand winch reinforced with screwed support or with fixation support; car-carrier road hand winch (right or left) used for traction and suspension of loads in car-carrier trucks; mobile road hand winch (open or closed) for cargo lashing.
The finishing of accessories, winches, and Robustec hand winches is done with electrolytic zinc plating and/or epoxy powder painting, protecting against bad weather and aggressive environments and providing greater durability to the products. These accessories and equipment meet the requirements of safety and risk factors, according to safety standards, to avoid accidents and optimize the results of the entire process.
See recommendations for the use of straps in transportation
When using the straps, you must check which type of lashing is most suitable for every kind of cargo carried. Each type of cargo requires a different lashing procedure, according to its characteristics, the lashing system, the body, and the anchoring point, among other factors.
To secure the load well, you need to consider its stability, its accommodation movement during movement, how it will be pulled on the body, the friction between the load and the body, the height of the cargo, the center of gravity, the incident forces along the route, among other requirements.
The straps need to be positioned correctly and securely attached to the load so that the weight of the product transported is evenly distributed along the belt. The lashing must be firm so that the products transported do not shake during the trip.
For a secure lashing, avoid placing protection on the lashing points that could compromise the integrity of the strap, such as sharp edges, cuts, abrasives, or sharp edges. Use plastic angles to protect the straps from contact with abrasive body corners.
To calculate the load securing, you can consult the ABNT NBR 15883 standard – Textile straps for securing loads – Calculation of stresses, which specifies the minimum requirements for the securing set and the correct dimensioning of the fastening for the safe transport of loads.
Meet the models of lashing straps
With more than 30 different items, Robustec lashing straps offer various mounting options and capacity, according to the application and the specific load securing needs of each customer.
These products offer several options for assembly and capacity, according to their application and the specific load securing needs of each customer. You can choose between models with hooks in the flat, “J,” triangle, “Moto,” grapple, and swivel formats, all with or without hand winch.
Robustec lashing straps are 100% polyester and chemically treated for less water absorption, and also receive heat treatment, according to the requirements of safety standards. Some materials undergo heat treatment, and the hooks and hand winches are made of bichromatic steel.
Meet the legislation on cargo lashing
The cargo lashing sets composed of hand winch, strap, and hook provide greater security and efficiency in transport. Used equipment must be resistant and comply with current legislation.
Since the beginning of 2017, cargo ropes have been banned by Resolution 552 of the National Traffic Council (Contran). The purpose of the measure is to improve security requirements.
Another Contran measure, resolution 588, prohibits the use of fixing hooks attached directly to the wooden crossbar of the body, which must have chassis and metal crossbars. The recommended metal fastener has three screws – one vertically and two horizontally – so that its base has more support.
This equipment must also comply with the Regulatory Norm NR 11 of the Ministry of Labor, which establishes safety standards for the transportation, handling, storage, and handling of materials.
